That mistake is that unless you are a LEAF node on Usenet, you have some responsibility to keep the map articles around long enough that they can get batched up for the sites you exchange news with. In many cases, this is no big deal, but if you are running a batching script that makes sure that it doesn't batch "too much" into the uucp spool directory for a particular site or if you are using ihave/sendme, then it may take a couple of days for the articles to get batched for the other site. If you've deleted them right after you received them, then they aren't given any (or much) chance to propagate.
