I've also been "corrupted" into being a "practical" engineer too, by the School of Hard Knocks. What I've found are that quick and dirty expedient bit-saving hacks (a) last much longer than you expect them to, and (b) turn into massive, MASSIVE maintenance headaches, especially when some other bright engineer decides an extension is needed. If you still disagree, I guess it's a religious argument and we might as well stop.
