This is very unnerving. I have a Supra 20Meg drive that I believe is a MiniScribe - at least the software format program references this. Anyway, the drive will be sitting running quietly and I'll be reading conversations, say on P-Net, when all of a sudden I'll get the buzz saw sound effect too. It will fade in, last for 15 or 20 seconds say, then fade back out. I've been wondering if this is some speed adjustment that the drive has sensed it needs to make. When the drive, on occasion, was active during this phenomenon there was no apparent read/write problem. I don't know if this sound effect is the same as the ones described by the previous posters. I am guessing that what the sound really is is a harmonic vibration of some sort that gets started. What sets it off or if it is causing any damage I have no idea.
