If he gets a hard drive system, my recommendation is the ICE-64 BBS. It
was primarily designed for hard drive systems, unlike most of the other BBS
programs out there, and has generally been much more reliable
than the alternatives.

The authors of that BBS program run a BBS at 318-984-3854. A BBS running
the program with a Xetec 20 meg hard drive is at 318-232-5697, and
the guy running that board has done some really neat things with it.

The problem I've had with PC clones is that there are no decent BBS
programs for it. Fido/RBBS clones seem to predominate. I find no
PC BBS's out there with the minimum functionality of "vnews" or "vn",
or even ICE or C-NET on C-64 machines. Perhaps there's a program I haven't
noticed. But all in all, the BBS market for IBMs looks pretty dreary --
most people seem content to run Fido or RBBS, under the assumption that
all they really want to do is upload and download, anyhow. Me, I like
messages and postings, which is why I read USENET, which is why I
call a variety of BBS's around the country, none of which are run on
IBM-compatibles mainly because I haven't found one yet that emphasizes
posting instead of file transfer (I don't have a PC clone myself -- why
would I want to download PC drech?).
