As many friendly netters pointed out, the tgrind program on the UNIX
TeX (I'm sure there should be a (tm) there somewhere) distribution
tape does exactly what I wanted.  I didn't find it here because it
wasn't installed (yet).  Anyway, thanks to all who responded.
