   Thanks to those who suggested ways of numbering groups of letters,
as described in the note "TeX memory problem" which I posted before.
I tried to send responses, but am getting error messages.
 
   I would like to know if there is a way of doing it which involves a 
small modification of the macro I gave with the original note.
