I have asked this question several times, but either I have been asking in
the wrong newsgroups, or no-one knows (the latter seems more likely)

I am using MS C on Xenix 2.2.1.  I am trying to find a way to determine
how many characters (if any) are waiting to be read from the input buffer

Is there any cut and dry method of doing this? some people have suggested
trapping an I/O signal.  Others have suggested using ioctl()
