Japan has a greater per-capita GNP than the US. The USSR is about 2.5 times as large as the US. PRC has about 4 times as many people as the US. South Africa and the USSR have more "natural resources" than the US. Japanese residential property is now worth more than twice as much as all the residential property in the US. Perhaps the most important natural resource is highly educated people with a strong work ethic and adaptability to change. (It also helps to have government-business cooperation and limited access to one's domestic markets.) Incidentally, the US is about 24 times the size of Japan, if memory serves. How much of this land we still own is uncertain, though.
