As we see computer controlling and serving in toasters, cars, banks, schools, airplanes, satellites, telephone systems, etc, is there any reason to believe they can all be the same? Then why don't we just replace toasters, cars, banks, schools, airplanes, satellites, and telephone systems by "widgets" that perform all these tasks together? I hope that's a convincing argument for a layman in computer science. Don Gillies {ihnp4!uiucdcs!gillies} U of Illinois {gillies@p.cs.uiuc.edu}
