(I am talking about application design including logical, conceptual and physical schema design - NOT the design of DBMS software.) Radian is a multidiscplinary technical services company with emphases on environmental and engineering applications. Our Computer Applications Department has groups specializing in database management, computer mapping, expert systems, physical modeling [i.e. modelling physical phenomena such as atmospheric dispersion], and hardware interfaces [e.g. to special purpose hardware or instrumentation]. The typical project involves providing the client with an integrated solution involving some or all of these computer disciplines as well as in-house expertise in the relavent engineering/scientific discipline (Chemical Engineering, Environ- mental Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, etc.). Requirements for current openings include: o BSCS or equivalent (no I'm not sure what 'equivalent' is, but if you think you are equivalent and you meet the rest of the requirements, send me a resume) o FIVE or more years of experience in database application system design and development. o Experience in technical project management. o Facility with more than one DBMS and at LEAST one 3rd generation language in a database management context. Any and all of the following would improve your chances: o Education and/or experience in a hard science or engineering discipline. o Familiarity with UNIX/C/Sun OS [the most common environment at Radian.] o Familiarity with VAX/VMS (& uVax) o Experience with SQL-based relational DBMS under Unix [E.g. Empress/32 or Oracle, both of which we are now using] o Experience with PC-DOS based network database applications. o Familiarity with ADABAS & NATURAL in an IBM/MVS environment [Yes, not all of our clients have seen the light and ditched big blue for Unix :-)] The successful candidate will be a self-starter who has both excellent technical capabilities and the communications skills / interpersonal skills to function within an interdisciplinary matrix-management organization. The positions will involve technical contributions, project management, client interaction, and marketing support (in the form of assistance in proposal preparation and/or technical presentations to prospective clients). The career path is open and includes a 'technical guru' ladder (technical contributions PLUS technical project management), a staff management ladder (staffing and training responsibilities plus some technical contribution & project management), and a marketing ladder (NOT MBA types; technical folks who represent our capabilities to clients and the clients needs [== market demand] to the staff management; also involves traditional marketing functions such as closing the deal and managing the project from an administrative point of view.) We are looking for someone with good ideas who can immediately assume significant responsibilities as well as contribute to the long-range direction of the department.
