The HP DeskJet is, indeed, a nice printer with quality output, and for the most part, is compatible with the LaserJet [500[+]] and the series II printers. Although the escape sequences for font downloading are the same, the format of the data that follows the escape sequences is NOT! (I complained about the lack of font info. in the user's manual already.) The retailers don't have the documentation you need. You may, however, call HP Customer Information Center (800-752-0900) and ask for "DeskJet Softfonts & Softfont File Format," dated February 22, 1988. This will provide all the information you need about font design and downloading. I also suggest making a copy for your retailer! :-) Of course, this won't solve the problem of using existing packages that do downloading to 500s and series IIs; contact the software supplier for drivers for the DeskJet -- they should be available Real Soon Now... I'm working on a filter that will accept LaserJet 500 files and transform them so they may be printed on the DeskJet; I'll post it when I'm finished.
