Actually, the 8-MHz Atari STs are within a factor of 2 of the speed of the Compaq 16 MHz 386s when you bypass the overhead of GEM and TOS (or leave GEM and TOS in and compare with Windows/386 -- same ratio). So you are unlikely to be happy with one and consider the other unacceptable. On the other hand, 386 Minix is likely to be a rewrite on a comparable scale to the conversion to the 68000 if it is to be really effective. Quite a wait, I'll wager.
