Do these need special software? > I've never seen documentation for the ProFile, but it's as easy to set up as a floppy drive. Just plug the drive into the card and the card into a slot. There is no special software needed, buy you can only use ProDOS with it. Formatting can be done with Filer, Copy ][+, etc. Unfortunately, this isn't a hard format (i.e. it just writes a blank catalog on the disk).
