Having had our share of crashes on SMD drives, I'm searching for alternative storage systems. The cost of ESDI/SCSI drives is dramatically more cost effective than their 8" and 14" counterparts. I've had quite a bit of experience with CDC WREN III and IV drives, and of the 6 drives I've evaluated, NONE have had any problems whatsoever. And more recently, MAXTOR has released a high capacity drive in the 18ms(?) range. I'd like to get all the information I can regarding sites currently using these drives as system devices. Of particular interest are the model/mfg of the drive/controller combination and driver implementations on BSD 4.3 (Mt. XINU compat. perhaps) and ALL problems encountered. Please feel free to discuss with me any ideas, comments or suggestions. I am currently convinced this is the Best Way, but know not the possibilities and capabilities of these drives on a VAX/BSD setup. Please mail all responses, as I will post a summarization. -- Scott G. Taylor PMD Resources, Newbury Park CA (805) 499-0367 mutley!staylor@wlbr.eaton.com Disclaimer: They really don't know me here.
