Although subdirectories on floppies might seem impractical, they can be useful if one has multiple small documents, each of which fall into a different class (e.g. clinical notes, consults, memos, letters, etc.), but only a few of each document. Because of the idiocy of MSDOS's 11 character file names, the sudirectory names help organize the documents on a floppy.
