SCO provides two methods of installing software under Xenix.  
/etc/install: this provides a simple tar the disk then run
a shell script type installation - the init script invoked can
be as simple or complex as you like.
/etc/custom: This is a far more complex installation and maint
program that provides the ability to install and/or remove
modules at will whilst maintaining the correct permissions.

It sounds from your posting that what you need is custom not
install.

We use both custom and install within our product range 
and in general find that custom gives less problems but
takes more time to get right.
