Did you install the color database?  I had exactly the same problem (all
clients work except xterm) and it turned out my color database was
broken.  This was on a monochrome VaxStation.  The color database is
installed after everything else by the top-level Makefile; it is easy to
forget this if you are doing things piecemeal by hand (as I had to do
due to disk space limitations).  If this is the case it may actually be
worth a bug report, since everything else appears to use a reasonable
default...

PS: the color database is /usr/lib/X11/rgb.???; I believe it is installed
from util/rgb.
