This is standard AmigaDos behaviour, but only vague reference is made to it in the manuals. This is very similar to the ram: initialization of putting the line "DIR RAM: >NIL:" in your startup-sequence so that an icon appears for it. The system does not seem to really mount the device until some command is run which requires a lock on that device.
