When you start Basic(a) from the DOS prompt there are options that you may use; one of these is /S:bsize. The default maximum buffer size for random files is 128K, you may specify up to 32767 for the buffer size. I found this one page 2-6a of my BASIC 1.1 manual (I couldn't find it in 3.0 or 3.2) From the DOS prompt enter BASICA /S:1024. No signature (beyond my ability at this time)
