That Applix 1616 computer does sound like it would be a great project.
(see article 290).  Can somebody send me some information about this
machine?  Would there happen to be a Applix 1616 user's group somewhere
in Oregon (to much to ask, you say).  Anyway, any information would be 
appreciated, either email or posting it here in comp.sys.m68k.
