The VAX has loadable control store (at least the 11/780) as an option.
In all the years we've had them, to my knowlege only one person ever
used the feature. He coded an FFT instruction, and wrote a master's
thesis about it. Note that no one else seems to have used the store, or
even his neat instruction.

As I recall he got about 4:1 improvement in performance, but that was
many years ago and he may have gotten more.
