I have used many CAD packages in my work (mainly IBM packages) and most of them seem to support the DXF standard. As I understand the format, it seems so support many of the features that this discussion seems to be looking for. I am not sure if it is in the public domain, or if some company owns the rights to the source. AutoDesk heavily supports the standard in all of its software. I hope this helps. Julian L.
