I'm not terribly up to date on the low end HP workstations, but perhaps a
9000/310 could be set up to your specs in the required price range.  I know
that a reasonable system can be had in monochrome with the 68020 processor
for around $7,000 (318M?).  Of course, I myself would like a 835 at home...
