I had this very same problem...tried to UnBinHex stuff, got a
dastardly disk-based error (-39) that I'd never seen before,
etc.  However, I figured it out!  After playing around with it
for a few more minutes, I found that if there was at least
three lines of non-BinHex text before and after the file, then
it would be acceptable and everything would work out happily.

I never had the archiving problems, though, as I "Stuffed"
400K worth of "Stuff" into 191K.  That was fun.
