When running under multifinder, "about finder" shows the system
steadily growing.  In time one runs out of room to run things that
were runnable earlier.  

- What is the cause in the growth of the amount of memory used by system?

- Is there any way to clear out the memory occupied by system and make
it get back to its former reduced size?
