I don't know when it will be shipping, but we have been running beta versions
of the NeWS server on 4d's for about a month.  Before then the mex emulation
mode (now called "max") was not happening.  Now, max is pretty good for non-
demanding applications, but can be hosed by really flipping windows around or
be creating a huge number of windows.  The source release, by the way, builds
pretty nicely, compared with earlier sgi releases.
