I posted 2 days ago about a Panic I was having with the boot
floppy. (PANIC: splint: logic error in misc.s) 
It turned out that the EGA card was in intelligent mode that the
Kernel did not understand. The boot floppy worked like a charm
when I set this to dumb mode. 

The Tech-support of Micro-port was RIGHT. My apologies to them.
