A quick squirt of Freon-TF to the bottom of the little cluster of nylon gears which drive the ribbon cures the problem nicely. One of the gears is mounted on a small lever which is supposed to swing between two other gears as the printer-head changes directions (The head can be moved by hand with firm, gentle force while the power is off...to observe the lever action). A small amount of stiff grease had worked its way down and retarded the "swinging" action.
