I would have to recommend the Panasonic line of NLQ Printers.
Either the KX-P1080i which has 3 print styles:
     1) Standard Dot-Matrix
     2) Near Letter Quality   (very good, by the way)
     3) Compressed type

... or the KX-P1091i  which has all of the above, plus a
    Boldface type mode.  The latter runs at 160 characters
per second, while the former is closer th 120
(not much difference, really)

At my last check, Consumer Reports Magazine had rated the Panasonic
line as tops.  That was enough for me.  They can be had rather
cheaply through mail-order Computer Companies like Tussey.
Mine cost $189.00  (and you will need an Interface)
