I am attempting to program data acquisition/process control programs in MS Basic and it seems that whenever I direct ASCII output to a serial port, the Mac crashes hard, ie unrecoverably. I've traced it to a single line of code that sends an ASCII string to the modem port. I have Macsbug installed but cannot trap on the error because the crash affects all running program; the only recovery is rebooting. Is there anybody out there with a patch to fix this problem?
