I'm about to do the same thing, having to handle input from keyboard and
comms line, and had come to the same decision of using multiple tasks.
I'm planning to use message queues for communication.

Hardware: IBM AT, 6 Mhz
OS: IBM XENIX 2.00 (yeah, antique)

Query: Will this setup handle message queues fast enough so that the
user will not notice the time it takes for his keystroke to go from
the keyboard handler process to the display process?
