At some point I noted that when running emacs on my sun, the "Left" key acted as a Meta key (as on a Symbolics) so that it was a modifier key (like control or shift). This is great! However, this is NOT the case when I rlogin to one of the VAX hosts and use Emacs there. The "left" key has no apparent effect at all. You are loosing the 8th bit. Try: rlogin -8 and see if your Meta-Key doesn't begin working again.
