An infinite number of thanks to all who responded.  My need was
simple, so I just used sh.  What I've got is a bunch of
short files, each containing an escape sequence for my gigi, and
I wanted to create one script to cat them, with multiple hard links
to it:

cat /usr/local/lib/gigi/`basename $0`

does the trick quite nicely.
