Not entirely true.  I downloaded the complete sources to Thom's version of
ARC from his bulletin board a number of times in the past few years, before ARC
really caught on big.  It was regularly one version behind the "latest and 
greatest", but you could get it for the price of a phone call.  I have no idea
whether the UNIX versions were ported from one of these, however.
