I could believe that the assembler's quitting in the middle of a pass
could be the cause of your problems.  As far as I'm concerned, your
assembler is broken.  I used that *thing* for years until I got a
chance to upgrade to MASM 4.0.  Now I'm using 5.0 and am happier yet.

I suggest that you switch to either MASM or A86.  Either one should do
the trick.  A86 is much, much faster, but accepts slightly different
syntax.
