Typical uptimes for these machines (in our environment) are about a month or more (limited by the need to reconfigure and by the recent frequency of power outages). In terms of functionality, the IP/TCP implementation is pretty close to 4.3 BSD. The support software is designed to run on a variety of machine types and flavors of Unix (including MACH, and Xenix). The operating software has many useful features for maintenance and performance. A quick summary: Subnet Routing Domain Name Service Lots of Security Options (user configurable) Facility for crash dump recording. High throughput (all 16/32 ports run at 9600 bps) Good user interface Easy installation Good customer support We're really impressed with these machines. A few years ago, the Electrical and Computing Engineering Dept. had designed terminal servers that were as good as anything then on the market (in some cases it was better). I don't handle the business around here, but we saved quite a bit of money in terms of man-hours and hardware in converting to Annexes. Oh- I don't have any relation to Encore other than installing their equipment and using it. Tom Holodnik Carnegie-Mellon University
