You can use 'sort-columns' on GNUS's *Subject* buffer. Just make it writable with C-x C-q. Then go to the first unread article and pad the subject with lots of spaces. Then go to the end of the buffer and move point to the start of the subject field. Then use M-x sort-columns and C-x C-q to make the buffer read-only again!
