One possibility for counting pages on a LaserJet II is to use the
printer-selftest. It will print a status pages including the state
of an internal pagecounter. You can force the printer into the
selftest under software-control, by sending an <ESC><e>.

If anybody knows about a way to check this internal pagecounter,
please let me know.
