there's configuration options on the annex - you can set it for
8 bit passthrough or for 7 bits plus a parity bit.  The particular
one that Jon is connecting through has 7 bits/even parity.

annex boxes are a pretty scarce resource around here, but if
it doesn't mess other things up we'll try out the 8 bit setting.
