It still seems that the ++ / -- operators WERE written with the PDP-11 in mind as it has the instructions in op-codes. And yes, Richard, UNIX does date back to the PDP-7, with BCPL then B as untyped language. It was the rich variety of types in the -11 that inspired the typing in C. If anyone has a burning question in this topic (it really belongs in ..std.c or ..lang.c), post a request in those newsgroups.
