That sounds like a problem specific to being next to the monitor, rather than
being on the side.  Many monitors put out more than enough energy to occasionally
mess with a nearby floppy disk.  If you're aleady having reliability problems, 
you could probably get just about any monitor to push you over the edge if you
put your floppy right next to it.
