I used to turn that sucker on and off HUNDREDS of times a week! Perhaps the C-64 had all its chip soldered in place? Thermal cycling can make a chip walk out of its socket, given enough cycles. Also, the "strain" on any motored devices occurs during power-up, power-down, and changes in the load. A motor will spin nicely almost forever.
