A 1024 by 768 display works out to be 89dpi on a 16" trinitron monitor, and 72dpi on a 19" trinitron. The comparable numbers for the 1152-by-900 display of a Sun 3 are 100dpi and 81 dpi, respectively. The 100 dpi display looks good to me on a Sun, so will I find the 16" display acceptable on a Mac? My work involves a fair amount of text preparation, program edits (Matlab), and display of scientific graphics. I also anticipate extensive use of Mathematica.
