In Don Crabb's inaugural column in Byte (August 1988, p. 125), he mentions that: "Almost as soon as the System Tools 5.0 was installed, we started having serious problems with MacPascal 2.1 (the latest version). Program files became corrupted, printing failed, working programs refused to run, and so on." Mr. Crabb's column does not discuss whether these problems persisted when using MacPascal with System Tools 6.0, because at the time his article was written he had access only to beta versions of the 6.0 release. Macintosh Pascal 2.1 is heavily used by classes in our microcomputer facility. We are contemplating the (for us) precipitous upgrade from System 3.2/Finder 5.3 to System Tools 6.0 (System 6.0/Finder 6.1), and are concerned that we may encounter the problems that Don Crabb describes. We have performed our own rudimentary tests and have not yet directly encountered any significant problems with MacPascal in combination with the 6.0 system release. However, we would like to hear from others who are using Macintosh Pascal 2.1 with System 6.0, either on a standalone basis or in combination with network file server software such as AppleShare or Waterloo MacJANET. If you are using Macintosh Pascal with the System Tools 6.0 distribution, I would like to ask that you share your experiences with us by sending email to the address below. We will summarize your responses to the net. (Symantec/THINK is currently still in the process of taking over Macintosh Pascal from Apple, and apparently does not yet have a technical support structure in place. We have been told by THINK that their first MacPascal tech support meeting may take place later this week.)
