This is interesting.  I had a similiar problem.  I had a fractal drawing
program (my own) in the background and the finder in the foreground.  Any
finder icon's text that I touched turned into dashes.  I discovered that my
program was indeed the culprit as I was generating auto-key events in
the background intentionally (a real kludge to fool the screen-blanker).
