MUSH benchmarks on system V and 4.3BSD-tahoe is quite favorable towards 4.3bsd-tahoe by a significant amount. Clearly some of this is due to a much better compiler on 4.3BSD (thanks Donn Seeley!), but general kernel overhead is a lot less also. tcp/ip on 4.3BSD-tahoe has van jacobsons performance mods.
