Many, many thanks to all that sent me this answer and/or posted info of
the same stripe.  That was all it took.  I guess I'd gotten too wrapped
up in various other esoterica and lost track of things that were right
there!

There were several ideas for termcap entries too, and I WILL try some of
them out, but being a lazy bastid I was thrilled to find that a simple
if then/else during login did get things going so quickly.
