Hah!  Gnews, the GNU Emacs rrn emulator, now has a digest mode.

Gnews 1.8, the currently available version, has just "n" and "p" in
its digest code.  The improved readability is astonishing.

Gnews 1.9--available soon--supports digest followups, replies, and
newsgroups with mixed digests and articles (like comp.text).

If anyone wants a copy, it's available by anonymous ftp from ucbvax,
file /pub/gnews-1.8-tar.Z.  (mode=binary).
