[I want to include comp.sources.bugs on this posting, but I know that
 postnews will give me fits if I try ... sigh]

Anyway ... something has happened to me about 3 or 4 times in the last
month or so.  I'd try to post a followup to an article and rn would
die because it's % buffer overflowed (or some such message).  Each
time it turned out that the message had a very loooong References: list.
Using postnews to make the followup works, but is inconvenient.

I think what is happening is that lots of people are converting over
to using longer message-id's (for some reason) -- something which
Larry didn't expect when he originally wrote rn.
