It is hypothesized that it mutated from the virus that causes enteritis in the mink and the feline panleukoptic virus. It was firerst described (I believe in the late 70's, and various vaccines have been available since the early 80's. It is an airborne virus that is spread through feces, and has reached epidemic proportion among dogs, coyotes, and now the famous WOLVES of Isle Royal.
